Lorenzo Maurizio was born in 1686 to a large upper-class family in Italy. He grew up with a priest as his teacher, and Lorenzo discerned a call to the priesthood that he followed to his ordination at the age of 24. After six years as a parish priest, Lorenzo desired more simplicity and inner peace, so he joined the Capuchins. He took the name Ignatius, and he was put under the charge of a novice half his age. In several different Capuchin houses, he served as a sacristan, novice master, military chaplain, spiritual director, and popular confessor. Ignatius spent his last days visiting the poor and sick in hospitals, giving blessings and spiritual comfort.
CHALLENGE
St. Ignatius of Santhiá often said, “Paradise is not made for slackers. Let’s get to work!” and he served God and his order with unwavering cheer and obedience. Once again we are reminded that it’s easy to be a slacker, but that’s not the way of the faithful follower of Christ. Has your parish asked for volunteers recently? Today is the day to stand up and get to work.
