In Austria in 1265, a poor family of peasants welcomed a baby girl into their family and they named her Notburga. When she was old enough, she took a job for a count, working as his cook. Once everyone was fed, Notburga would take the leftovers and give them to the poor. Then one day her mistress caught her and ordered her to feed the leftovers to the swine, so Notburga began feeding the poor from her own portion, especially on Fridays when she would fast. Even then she was fired from her job for helping the poor, and she began working for a farmer. When the farmer wanted her to work instead of going to Mass, she said, “Let my sickle be the judge,” then threw it into the air... where it stayed. Then she went to Mass.
CHALLENGE
St. Notburga fed the poor from food that would otherwise go to waste, or be fed to animals. Countless millions go hungry every day, and to make a difference, Panera Bread’s “Day-End Dough-Nation” program distributes unsold bread and baked goods to needy charities in your community. Today, contact a local Panera store and ask how you can help deliver leftover food to the hungry in your community.
