Born to a family of prosperous Korean Catholics in 1804, Francis Ch'oe Kyong-hwan's grandfather was the first member of his family to be baptized. Lacking a local priest, many Catholics began to revert to pagan ways, so Francis moved his family to a small village where they could live their faith. The village of four families grew to over twenty, and Francis was their catechist, teaching every night. With political winds shifting in Korea, Francis felt persecution was imminent, so he buried all the sacramentals to prevent them from being profaned. He was arrested along with his wife and children, but even under extreme torture he refused to deny his faith. He and his wife died as martyrs, but one of their sons became a priest.
CHALLENGE
St. Francis Ch’oe Kyong-hwan said, “We hide our religious articles so that they will not be profaned but books are not blessed. A soldier going into war needs his battle instructions. At a time like this we must study all the books more earnestly.” Do you own the basics: a Bible, the Catechism, a Missal, and the Liturgy of the Hours? Do you read them? If you’re missing any of the basic “battle instructions”, today is the day to buy them.
