In 1867 Eugenia Picco was born In a little town outside of Milan, Italy. Her father was a famous blind violinist who toured the country and her mother was a lapsed Christian who went with him, so Eugenia was mostly raised by her grandparents. One day her mother returned home alone, and Eugenia was led to believe her father had died. Her mother continued to live a faithless and morally corrupt life, but Eugenia had within her the instinct to pray daily at a nearby cathedral. At the age of 20, she felt the call to sanctity and left home to join the Little Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, eventually becoming Superior General of the order. Until her death at age 54 she led the order with heroic virtue and love for others and the Eucharist.
