Caterina Mattei was born into a poor family in Italy in 1487. Her parents fought often, usually over money, and while they were Catholics they didn’t practice a life of faith. One day when Caterina was about five, she was praying alone in her room and the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her and told her that Jesus wanted to make her His spouse. Then Jesus appeared as a child her own age, along with other saints including St. Catherine of Siena. The mystical visions and ecstasies continued, and she wanted to become a professed Dominican. Her family was opposed so she became a Dominican tertiary, and devoted herself to prayer. She was sought for her spiritual guidance, and many miracles happened both before and after her death at age 87.
CHALLENGE
During one of Blessed Caterina Mattei’s ecstasies, she was told she would, for an instant, experience the pains of Purgatory. Then a spark of fire, seen by others, hit her cheek and left a mark. Caterina said the pain was the worst she had ever felt. Today, pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and consider making the first Tuesday of every month a day of fasting, prayer, and Mass for the Holy Souls.
