Saint Monica was born in the year 332 in present-day Algeria. Her parents were Christians, but around the age of 13 they arranged for Monica to be married to an older pagan man named Patricius. Patricius had a bad temper and was unfaithful, and to make matters worse for Monica, his harsh mother moved in with them. Monica found refuge in her faith, and she prayed constantly for her husband, her mother-in-law, and then her son, Augustine, who by the time he was 17 was fully immersed in an immoral life. Monica’s decades of ceaseless prayers were answered: her mother-in-law and husband converted to Christianity, and her son went on to become a Doctor of the Church and one of the most influential saints of all time.
CHALLENGE
St. Monica's endless love and tireless prayers for the conversion of her son took 17 years to bear fruit, and her tears of sorrow during that time turned to tears of joy when he converted to the Catholic Church. Is there someone who’s conversion you prayed for, but grew discouraged and stopped? Today is the time to start again, and never stop until they come home to the Church.
