The son of a noble Italian family, Philip Benizi was born in Florence in 1233. He was educated in Padua and Paris, earning doctorates in both philosophy and medicine. After practicing medicine for a while, his love for God and the Blessed Virgin Mary drew him into joining the Servite Order when he was 20. He was ordained six years later and quickly became renowned for his preaching. At 34 he was elected Prior General of his order, reluctantly held the post for 18 years, and avoided being elected pope by hiding in a cave. Philip expanded the number of Servite communities, reformed and defended the Order, founded the Servite Third Order, performed miracles, and preached the Gospel with apostolic zeal until his death at age 52.
CHALLENGE
One Thursday after Easter, St. Philip Benizi was at Mass and heard from the Book of Acts: “Philip, go and join yourself to that chariot.” This passage leapt out at him, and he immediately felt his calling to the Servites. God sometimes whispers to us through the Scriptural texts. Today, read the Mass readings for the day. What is God whispering to you?
