Giuseppe Sarto was born in a little Italian town in 1835, the son of a cobbler and a seamstress. His large family was a poor one, but with the help of his pastor, Giuseppe procured two scholarships and followed his calling to the priesthood. After an initial assignment at a parish in the country, his piety, pastoral zeal, charity, and deep humility saw him rise to cardinal at the age of 58, and 10 years later he was elected pope, taking the name Pope Pius X. His pastoral life saw him promote the frequent reception of the Eucharist, reform the liturgy, Curia, and Breviary, help the poor and missionaries, and fight against modernism which he called “the summation of all heresies”.
CHALLENGE
St. Pope Pius X was uncomfortable with much of the pomp surrounding the papacy, saying, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I wish to die poor.” Does your wealth, education, or social status make you feel superior to others? Does their absence make you feel inferior? Today, go to Mass or Eucharistic adoration, and focus your prayer on thanksgiving and love of neighbor.
