Born in 1090 to a family of highest French nobility, Bernard was given a good education, and everyone marveled at his intelligence, heroic virtue, and piety. At 20 he joined the Cistercian order, and after five years his abbot sent him to establish a new monastery in Clairvaux, which quickly grew to over 700 monks. Though a monastic by nature, Bernard found himself counseling bishops, popes, and kings, preaching in France, Germany, and Italy, and participating in the Second Lateran Council. He also settled disputes, fought heresies, ended a schism, and preached on the necessity of a Second Crusade. And if that wasn’t enough, Bernard’s intense theological studies and extensive writings earned him the title Doctor of the Church.
