In 1601, John Eudes was born to a French farm family near Normandy. Though his parents hoped he would get married, he left for a Jesuit college when he was 14, joined the Congregation of the Oratory when he was 22, and was ordained 2 years later. For the next decade he volunteered to help victims of the plague, gave parish missions, preached against Jansenism, and was a sought-after confessor. After starting the Sisters of Charity of the Refuge to help wayward women, he resigned from the Oratorians in 1643 and founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary to form diocesan seminaries. Before he died at the age of 79, he authored many works, including the first book ever written on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
CHALLENGE
St. John Eudes said, "Pride causes the sinner to make an idol of self, and put himself in God's place, since he prefers himself to God when his own interests, his satisfactions, his own will and desires are at stake." Today spend at least fifteen minutes in contemplative prayer asking to be shown how you make an idol of self, then go to confession at the next opportunity.
