Born in a castle in modern-day Poland, Hyancinth was born into a family of nobles around 1185. His uncle was a priest and began his education, which was completed in Europe. In 1220 he was in Rome and met St. Dominic, and joined the newly-founded Order of Preachers. St. Dominic sent him to propagate the Order in Hyacinth's homeland of Poland, and he preached in Austria, Bohemia, China, Sweden, and Norway. He converted scores of people, built churches and convents, and performed miracles including bringing a child back from the dead. Struck ill with a fever in 1257, he celebrated his last Mass on the feast of the Assumption, was anointed at the altar, and died the same day.
CHALLENGE
St. Hyacinth had a tender devotion to the Blessed Mother, and he is often remembered for miraculously saving a heavy alabaster statue of Mary by carrying it away as if it weighed nothing while the town he was in was under attack. St. Hyacinth often looked to Mary for aid, and so should we. What is your biggest battle today? Kneel before a statue or painting of the Mother of God, and pray for her to intercede for you.
