Today the Church celebrates the bodily assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven after her death. No details are known for certain about the location or the event itself. What is known is that unlike her mother and other saints who lived in the time of Christ, no bodily relics of the Mother of God exist. Descriptions of her assumption circulated as early as the 2nd Century, and a feast commemorating the event has been celebrated since at least the 4th Century. On November 1st, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared infallibly that the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was a dogma of the Catholic Faith. Today's solemnity celebrates the completion of God's work in Mary, preserving from corruption the tabernacle that carried the Word made flesh.
CHALLENGE
Today is a holy day of obligation. When you go to Mass today, think about how when Mary was bodily assumed into Heaven she was reunited with her son, and contemplate the joy that she and Jesus experienced in this Heavenly reunion. In the Eucharist we are momentarily united with Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine. Before receiving the Eucharist, pray to receive Him with Mary's joy.
