Dominic de Guzman was born to wealthy Spanish nobles in 1170, and his mother had a vision while pregnant with him that he would set the world on fire. At the age of 14, Dominic began theological studies, and at 24 he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Osma where he developed a life of intense prayer in search for truth combined with the zeal to share it. Fourteen years later he found himself in Southern France preaching against the Albigensian heresy, and after a decade of preaching with little fruit, he formed the Order of Preachers, now known as the Dominicans, that balanced contemplation with preaching. He spent his life preaching, in prayer, and doing penance in tireless devotion to the service of God.
CHALLENGE
A vision of Mary to St. Dominic is widely regarded as the origination of the Rosary, to which Dominicans are deeply devoted. Pray the Rosary today for the six intentions of the Pope. They are: The Exaltation of the Church, The Propagation of the Faith, The Extirpation of Heresy, The Conversion of Sinners, The Concord between Christian Princes, and The Further Welfare of the Christian People.
