Born to Italian nobles in 1480, Cajetan de Thienna was dedicated as an infant to the Blessed Virgin Mary by his devout parents. His father died when he was only 2, but his mom ensured he had a good education and pious upbringing, which led to him receiving degrees in both canon and civil law in his early 20’s. He worked in the court of Pope Julian II, then left law for the priesthood and was ordained at 36. He quickly founded the Congregation of Clerics Regular in order to reform the Church by reforming the clergy. He also founded a hospital and a bank to save people from loan sharks, performed miraculous cures, and had visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
CHALLENGE
St. Cajetan was called “the hunter of souls” and he was known for a game he played where he would bet prayers, Rosaries, and devotional candles for some service he would perform for his parishioners. He always perfomed the service, and the parishioner always had to “pay”. Is there someone you know who could stand to pray a little more? Today, “bet” someone like St. Cajetan did.
