Stanley Rother was born in 1935 in Oaklahoma to a farmer, and after being ordained and serving in his local diocese for five years, he became a missionary to Guatemala in 1968 along with five priests, three religious sisters, and three laypersons. By 1975, the civil war prompted the others to return home, but Fr. Rother stayed to help the locals farm, hold five Masses in four different locations on Sundays, and perform around 1,000 baptisms a year. Fr. Rother witnessed government troops assassinate the parish deacon and a number of parishioners, so he went home in January of 1981, but three months later he went back, stating that "the shepherd cannot run from his flock." That summer, three masked men shot Fr. Rother to death.
CHALLENGE
Blessed Stanley Francis Rother had a deep love for the people in his communities and for bringing them the Gospel and Sacraments. There are five Catholic missionary organizations that operate in Guatemala. Today, go to https://uscatholicmission.org/guatemala and pick one. Then hand-write and mail a letter of encouragement, thanks, and praise for their work, and have a Mass said for them.
