One of the "Sons of Thunder", St. James the Greater was St. John the Evangelist's brother, and son of Zebedee the fisherman. We know nothing of the early life of St. James, but it's likely that the brothers from Galilee didn't receive any religious schooling and instead were part of the Jewish commoners. That makes it all the more noteworthy that St. James was part of a priviledged group of disciples, made up of him, St. John, and St. Peter. These three disciples were the only ones to witness the raising of Jairus' daughter, the Transfiguration, and the Agony in the Garden. Because of his Apostolic fire and zealous evangelization of the Gospel, St. James the Greater was the first Apostle to win the crown of martyrdom.
CHALLENGE
St. James the Greater, along with his brother, left their nets and father to become fishers of men. Think about how powerful Jesus' call was to them that they didn't hesitate to leave behind their family and livelihood. What is Jesus calling you to do today? Will you hesitate, or will drop your nets to follow his call?
