The daughter of aSwedish governor, Bridget was born in 1302 into a family that descended from Swedish royalty and owned considerable amounts of land. Her mother was very devout and taught Bridget the faith from an early age, and by 7, Bridget was having visions of the Crucifixion. Her mother died when Bridget was 12 and a year later she was wed in an arranged marriage. Her life as a princess and mother of eight—including St. Catherine of Sweden—didn't distract her from her faith, however. She became a Third Order Franciscan, gave spiritual direction and counsel to many priests, theologians, kings, and popes, and wrote down the mystical visions she continued to have. She eventually renounced her crown and founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior, which is known today as the Bridgettines.
