What we know for certain about St. Mary Magdalen is only found in the Gospels. We know she was a friend of Jesus and that he exorcised seven demons from her. We also know that she was filled with intense sorrow for her sin, washed the feet of Christ with her hair, was at the foot of the Cross at the Crucifixion, was at the tomb when they laid Christ in it, was the first to see the risen Christ on Easter morning, and was the first to tell the disciples the good news of the resurrection. From there, traditions vary wildly. The Greek church claims she died in Ephasus, while a French tradition holds that she and Lazarus brought the remains of St. Anne to Marseille and evangelized the whole region. Whether she died in the east or west, today is the feast of this holy disciple.

From a homily by St. Pope Gregory the Great: "Though the disciples had left the tomb, she remained. She was still seeking the one she had not found, and while she sought she wept; burning with the fire of love, she longed for him who she thought had been taken away." Do you long for Christ in your heart? Today, contemplate the great gift you receive in the Eucharist, and long to receive it.
