Peter To Rot was born in Papua New Guinea in 1912 to parents who were recent converts to the Catholic faith. At the age of 18, one of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who had brought the faith to the town, said that Peter expressed an interest in becoming a priest. His father disapproved of his son becoming a priest but he approved of him being trained as a catechist. After three years of training, Peter helped the parish priest, got married, and had several children. When the Japanese invaded in 1942, they imprisoned all the priests, but Peter wasn't a priest. He continued his apostolic work in secret, but when the Japanese occupiers began promoting polygamy, he spoke publicly for the sanctity of marriage, and for that, he was martyred.
CHALLENGE
As a catechist, Blessed Peter To Rot always had the word of God on his lips in part because he constantly carried a Bible with him. The Bible and his catechist's cross were the most important things he carried. What's the most important thing you carry? Today, select a Bible, book of saint quotes, or other devotional to carry around with you, that's not on your cell phone. Read it, teach from it, and use it to be a source of strength to others.
