Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Italy in 1901. His wealthy parents were agnostic, but Pier was graced with a profound draw toward Catholicsm from an early age. One day when a mother and her young son came to his door begging, he noticed the boy was shoeless and Pier took off his shoes and gave them to the boy. He was sent to a Jesuit primary school, his faith life blossomed, and his friends described him as "an explosion of joy". He prayed fervently for hours, joined many apostolates, actively opposed Fascism, became a third order Dominican, and when he wasn't playing jokes on his friends or climbing mountains, he was helping the poor. When he died from polio at the age of 24, thousands of people attended his funeral.
