When Saints Peter and Paul were put into prison, the two Apostles continued to preach, and, as the story goes, 47 prisoners and the two guards named Martinian and Processus were converted to Christianity. There was no water in the jail cell to baptize everyone, so St. Peter prayed and a stream of water gushed from the floor. When the jailer found out, he demanded that Martinian and Processus renounce Christ and give an offering to a golden statue of Jupiter. They refused, and were beaten with iron rods and scorched with fire, but their response was only, “Blessed be the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, whom his blessed Apostles have preached!” Unable to get them to renounce Christ, they were beheaded with St. Paul.
CHALLENGE
Sts. Martinian and Processus were just doing their job. They weren't looking for a change of faith, but when they heard the truth they opened their hearts to receive it, even when that truth challenged everything they believed. Is your heart open to the receiving the truth that the Catholic Church teaches? What Church teaching challenges you the most? Today, spend at least 15 minutes in prayer asking that your heart be opened to the challenging truth.
