Hey everyone, this is Mike from Catholic Treehouse, and I wanted to take a minute to talk about what goes into making an episode of The Saint Challenge, as well as some fun new things in store that will be exclusive for the community here on Locals.
We strive to make every episode of The Saint Challenge as succinct as possible. For those of you who listen to the audio version (here or on your favorite podcast app), every episode is 80 seconds long. Taking the entire life of a saint, and compressing it—and a challenge—into such a short timeframe is, well, work. This is especially true of some of the more prolific saints who's biographies sometimes fill books of hundreds of pages. So here's a peek our process:
The making of an episode of "The Saint Challenge"
First we choose the saint of the day. Sometimes, this in and of itself is work: sometimes we have to choose between a well-known saint, and a lesser-known saint that might inspire a better challenge or who's life is more relatable to a wider audience. This is followed by research into the saint's life, and identifying key facts. This takes about 25 minutes. (Unfortunately, a lot of interesting stuff has to be left out. More on this later!)
Next the script is written and it goes to proofing and editing. Changes are made as necessary, sometimes the challenge is re-worked or key details condensed. This takes another 10 minutes.
Recording and editing is next. It takes about 15 minutes to record the script (some days I get really tongue-tied and have to re-record a bunch of times for it to sound right), edit it, and export the audio. This is another 15 minutes.
Finally each episode is posted and scheduled for release here on Locals, as well as on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and all major podcasting platforms. This is the last 10 minutes.
All told, each 80-second episode takes about an hour to produce. And it's released free, to thousands of subscribers on a wide variety of platforms, every day.
Now back to the interesting stuff that has to be left out...
Announcing: bonus content, exclusive here on Locals
Many of the saints have really incredible stories that are simply too long and too involved to publish in 80 seconds. But they are fascinating stories that really give us a better understanding of the human nature of these people, the human nature that makes them a lot like each of us. So starting this month, exclusively for supporters here on Locals, I'll be posting informal audio recordings of bonus material as I come across it. Not every saint will have bonus material, but if I run across a story that I find fascinating, or funny, or otherwise interesting, I'll share it... But you'll have to be a supporter on Locals to access it. For as little as $4 a month you can help support the Saint Challenge and the Catholic Treehouse apostolate, and get access to this bonus material. (And for our existing supporters, a heartfelt "thank you" for helping keep the lights on in the treehouse.)
